Looking at Bobby Portis’ free agent stock for the Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks’ leading scorer off the bench, Bobby Portis has been a welcome surprise, considering the trajectory his career had taken prior to arriving to Milwaukee.

Portis has taken on the Bucks’ sixth man role and is in the middle of finishing with the most efficient season of his career where he’s averaging 11.8 points on. 525/.479/.750 shooting, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 56 appearances on the year.

Having eschewed more lucrative offers in free agency after seeing his $15 million team option get declined last fall, Portis decided to bet on himself, join a winning team and stood as one of the biggest free agency bargains.

Now, with a $3.8 million player option to mull over in a few months, Portis has a chance to recoup some of the money he shied away from receiving last offseason. And with the Bucks likely only having the taxpaying midlevel exception at their disposal, it seems hard to envision the Bucks will be able to afford Portis in the event he declines his option and is lured by more lavish offers.
