Giannis Antetokounmpo’s health will be an X-factor for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals vs. Phoenix Suns

All of the buzz leading into this matchup has been headlined by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s health status after being sidelined for Milwaukee’s last two games.

Thankfully avoiding any structural damage after a scary fall in Game 4 versus the Hawks, the Greek Freak spectated during Games 5 and 6 to nurse a hyperextended knee. Although there was speculation that Antetokounmpo would have potentially played in a hypothetical Game 7 with the Hawks had it come to that, the Bucks made sure that scenario never turned to a reality as they closed the series in six games. Because of it, they bought him some extra time, but he is currently listed as “doubtful” for tonight’s Game 1.

It goes without saying that the Bucks need their two-time MVP to better maximize their success in coming out on top in this series. Although they managed to win their last two matchups without him, this is the NBA Finals, the first time this team has played on this stage since 1974. Having Antetokounmpo, who was having a historically dominant postseason run, is obviously someone the team wants in the fold to make a run at their first title in 50 years.

Given his competitive drive, Giannis will likely do everything in his power to play. That does not mean that team should potentially jeopardize his health if that knee is not back up to speed and let him run free, but if he has progressed since the injury and is feeling good, he could get the green light from the opening tip. The question then would be just how healthy he is right now. Could it eventually be 70 percent? 80? Even 90? Nobody knows, but his health will be among the key X-factors for this matchup.
