Can Grayson Allen snap out of his funk against the Orlando Magic?

In a somewhat related note to DiVincenzo’s recovery from injury, Grayson Allen has been in somewhat of a mini-slump over his last seven games.

He’s shot 33.3 percent from 3 on over six attempts per game in his last seven while playing over 28 minutes per night. That is buoyed by a big outing against the New Orleans Pelicans, where he went 7-of-12 from deep and scored 25 points.

I say seven games because that was when Allen returned from his first missed game of the seasons due to a non-COVID illness. Since then, he was active but didn’t play in two games and has gone 1-of-10 from 3 in his last two games since returning.

In fact, if you use Basketball Reference’s Game Score metric, five of his six worst games by that stat have come in these last seven games (and six of his eight worst as well).

In both games against the Magic so far this season, Allen averaged 15 points and shot nearly 43 percent from 3 on seven attempts per game. Notably, those games came with the Bucks’ big three all available, so he’s still capable of good nights even when he’s not a focal point of the offense, clearly.

I’m sure part of this rough patch is due to his lingering illness, which Budenholzer has said was still affecting him and it’s also due to some shooting regression. Every shooter is going to slump, but it’s about impacting the game in other ways if those looks aren’t falling. It’s only a matter of time before Allen gets hot again like he did earlier this season.
