The verdict behind this proposed Daniel Theis trade for the Milwaukee Bucks

The talks between the Bucks and Rockets were likely just exploratory, and that is all they ever should be. Though Theis has been a solid rotation player before, he does not check all the boxes for what the Bucks need right now. They need a solid rim protector and a center that can space the floor, neither of which Theis exactly excels at. His nearly $9 million annual salary is just the icing on the cake as to why the front office should not pursue the soon-to-be 30-year-old.

Looking at the trade package, moving Hood and Ojeleye is reasonable, but the Bucks trading away their best young asset in DiVincenzo for a player like Theis would be questionable. If the Bucks will trade away DiVincenzo before the trade deadline, which they very well might, it should be in a deal that clearly helps the Bucks on impact, and this may not exactly be that move.

If the Bucks are truly looking around the trade market for centers, there are several others that are much more compelling. As Fischer noted in his article, they have also been linked to Jalen Smith, a second-year big man who is still on his rookie contract, which makes it much easier to acquire in any trade talks. Mohamed Bamba has also been a popular pick amongst fans, and rightfully so, as the big man is having a career year and is making less money than Theis. Richaun Holmes of the Sacramento Kings makes just a tick more than what Theis does, but he would be a better choice to target because he is far better.

The Bucks should be targeting a center before February 10, but not Theis, respectfully.
