The verdict on what the Milwaukee Bucks should do with Wesley Matthews in free agency

Re-signing Wesley Matthews in free agency seems like an easy decision for the Milwaukee Bucks.

It will not cost them a considerable amount to bring him back for another season, which should be music to the front office’s ears. Matthews proved to be a hidden gem last season, and keeping him around on a team-friendly deal makes sense as the Bucks look to fill out their roster for next year. On the court, Matthews may not be the player he once was, but as evidenced by his efforts after signing with the Bucks last season, he is still more than capable of making a significant impact on the defensive end, which is something this team needs. Fit is also something to consider here, as Matthews has shown that he can fit alongside stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and Jrue Holiday, among others, which is essential.

Just because the Bucks should retain Matthews this offseason does not mean they should not be seeking more youth, though. Perhaps they could look to take a young wing with the 24th selection in the upcoming NBA Draft and let them develop under an experienced veteran such as Matthews to eventually be his successor. That is just a thought, as there is no shortage of options regarding the Bucks’ potential plans with their first round pick, but going through with that idea would not be an ill-advised decision for most as the team looks to balance winning now and adding pieces that can help them contend for the future as well. Whatever the case, the Bucks should look to keep Matthews for another season, as he could be an incredibly valuable contributor next year.
