The verdict on whether or not a Robin Lopez reunion is worth pursuing for the Milwaukee Bucks

Signing Robin Lopez probably makes sense for the Bucks this offseason. Lopez probably won’t take up too much of a cost, considering he is likely on the last legs of his career.

Although Lopez isn’t particularly great at defending the perimeter, he did a tremendous job of defending the interior during his lone season with the Bucks. Lopez held opposing centers to just 41.9 percent shooting from the field, per NBA.com/stats. Those numbers are just from the field, not from three. With numbers like that, one could argue that Lopez is one of the more underrated interior defenders in the entire league.

Lopez likely won’t have too large of a role on the team, but that isn’t why pursuing him makes sense. Having Lopez there whenever the team is missing any of Antetokounmpo, Portis, or Brook Lopez will be crucial for the Bucks. At times, Milwaukee struggled defensively when any of the three went down with injuries to make up for what was missing. Lopez has shown in the past that he can lock up the interior just like his brother.

Robin Lopez provides the Bucks with depth that they were missing at the center positions at times throughout the 2021-2022 season. With Brook Lopez missing a large majority of the season due to back surgery, Milwaukee was down to only Antetokounmpo and Portis to fill the 5. Having Lopez as an insurance man if an event such as an injury were to happen again would be huge.
