Assessing Bobby Portis’ fit and role with the Milwaukee Bucks

During his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, Portis has established himself as one of the game’s top role players.

Portis’ flexibility was huge for the Bucks throughout the entire 2021-2022 season. As mentioned previously, Portis spent a large majority of the season starting for the Bucks while Brook Lopez recovered from back surgery. With Lopez coming back towards the end of the regular season and into the playoffs, Portis was happy to give up his starting role and slide back into his spot as the team’s sixth man.

With a hopefully healthy Lopez, Portis sliding back into the sixth man role will be huge for the Bucks. For a large majority of last season, the team struggled to find consistent scoring from their second unit. Adding a guy who’s coming off of a season where he averaged 14 points per game will definitely be huge to improving the issue.

Being on the bench should be better for Portis too, as his shooting percentages dipped last season as a starter. During his first season with the Bucks, his shooting numbers were insane, as he shot 52.3 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from three. When he was moved into the team’s starting lineup, those numbers dropped a little to 47.9 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from three. His numbers as a starter were still solid, but you start to see where having Lopez in the lineup positively affects Portis by seeing the dip between the two roles.
