An overall grade for Wesley Matthews’ new deal with the Milwaukee Bucks

In the grand scheme of things, there is very little to dislike regarding the Milwaukee Bucks’ move to bring Wesley Matthews back for another season.

The veteran was a key piece for them last season, having worked his way into the starting lineup due to his excellent defense and unmatched hustle. While his perimeter shooting may be streaky, Matthews is so important on the defensive end that the Bucks will live with it. Unlike where he left off last season, Matthews will likely return to a bench role next season, which should not be much of a surprise. It makes sense to start Matthews situationally for certain matchups, but not through an entire 82-game regular season. Still, there will be a clear-cut role for the wing next season.

Financially, this is also the definition of a low-risk move by the Bucks, as they managed to re-sign a quality rotational piece on a minimum deal. Looking around the league, Matthews has to be one of the better players signed to such a contract this offseason, given his importance to the Bucks. Keeping him around was an easy choice for Milwaukee to begin with, but Matthews’ willingness to accept less money to stick around with the Bucks made it an even easier decision.

It will be great to see Wesley Matthews back in Milwaukee for yet another go-round next season.
