Ranking the Milwaukee Bucks’ offseason moves – 1. Re-signing Bobby Portis to a four-year extension in NBA Free Agency
With all due respect to the Milwaukee Bucks’ other moves, retaining Bobby Portis was the team’s top priority this offseason. The big man has been a vital key to Milwaukee’s success over the past two seasons, and he was due for a quality raise after playing on consecutive team-friendly deals. The front office gave him just that as they inked Portis to a four-year deal worth $48.6 million to keep the People’s Champ around long-term. Despite a big raise, Portis making less than $13 million per season for the next four years is still a good deal for the Bucks.
Whether he has come off the bench or started, Portis has always been up to the task. He is the perfect fit with this franchise, bringing more shooting, rebounding, scoring, toughness, and, of course, sheer intensity whenever he sets foot on the court. At 27 years old and coming off the best season of his career, Portis has not yet reached his full potential, and he could continue developing with the Bucks over the next several seasons. While he will likely not be the team’s full-time starting center like he was last season, the big man has always made it clear that he is willing to embrace whatever role the Bucks need.
With Portis set to have four years on this deal, including a player option in 2025-26, it is great for fans to know that the center is locked up for the next several years. There was some uncertainty over the past two off-seasons whether or not Portis would return after signing short-term deals, so having him secured for several years is welcoming. In short, re-signing Portis to a long-term deal was the best move the Bucks made this offseason, keeping an essential piece to the puzzle.
