Ranking the Milwaukee Bucks’ offseason moves – 3. Drafting MarJon Beauchamp in the first round
Among many things, the Milwaukee Bucks needed to add some youth this offseason, given that they had one of the oldest rosters in the league. Set to pick in the first round of the NBA Draft for the first time since 2018, they had a great chance to add a young piece to this core, and they did so by selecting MarJon Beauchamp 24th overall. The 22-year-old does satisfy several needs for the Bucks, and he has the potential to play from the jump this season because of it.
In addition to youth, adding more wing depth was a need for the Bucks, given how much a lack of it plagued them last season. The addition of Beauchamp will immediately help them in that regard, giving coach Mike Budenholzer a 6-foot-6 swingman that can play multiple positions. Defensively, Beauchamp will be utilized to defend bigger wings nightly, which was yet another big issue for the Bucks in the postseason when Khris Middleton went down. There are more questions as to how Beauchamp will perform on the other side of the basketball. The rookie has never been much of a shooter, and shot creation is not exactly his strength either. It may take a while for Beauchamp to find his stride with the Bucks offensively, but, for now, it is something fans will be monitoring.
Right now, the best word to describe Beauchamp is potential. The 22-year-old wing possesses no shortage of it, and as one of Milwaukee’s finite young pieces, it will be up to the Bucks to help him unearth it over the next several years. With a great coaching staff and locker room, Beauchamp is in a great place in Milwaukee, and it will be fascinating to watch him develop. He will have to earn everything, but Beauchamp may find himself playing considerable minutes for the Bucks during the 2022-23 season if he puts the pieces together. With Khris Middleton and Pat Connaughton set to miss time to start the season, Beauchamp may get an opportunity early on.
