Gary Trent Jr. could solve consistent Bucks' problem if recent comments come true
By Dalton Sell
The Milwaukee Bucks are thrilled to have Gary Trent Jr. in town after signing him in NBA Free Agency, and the feeling is mutual.
Ever since he got to town this offseason, Trent has done nothing but express his excitement to assist the Bucks in their quest to win another title. However, with Trent signed to a one-year minimum deal, many have speculated that Trent's stint with the team may be short-term. However, Trent has let it be known that he thinks this could be just the beginning for him in Milwaukee.
In an interview with Sportskeeda's Grant Afseth, Trent did not mince words when asked about his deal and what the future might hold.
"It's a great opportunity. I'm 25, and I still have years left to grow. This is a great place to find a home base and be part of something long-term. It's an excellent organization with great players, a solid front office and great energy, so it's been great so far."
Gary Trent Jr. doesn't rule out a long-term future in Milwaukee
For years now, the Milwaukee Bucks have failed to find any continuity at the shooting guard position. In recent memory, Malcolm Brogdon, Donte DiVincenzo, Grayson Allen and Malik Beasley have held the mantle of starting shooting guard. Trent is the latest player to claim a spot that has felt like a turnstile over the past few years, and he could break tradition by sticking around for the long haul.
Continuity is huge in the NBA. When a team has a revolving door of players at a particular position, other players must constantly adjust and get used to this new player every year. If that player fits in well, keeping them around for the long haul helps tremendously from a chemistry standpoint. With everything that has gone down over the past year, the Bucks understand the importance of that.
Of course, it all depends on how well Trent plays. If he lives up to expectations, he will be seeking a raise compared to the minimum deal he's set to play on this season. Given the financial complexity the Milwaukee Bucks must navigate in their roster crafting, it'll be interesting to see how negotiations could eventually shake out.
If all goes well, perhaps Trent could follow the same path that Bobby Portis took a few years back, where he took smaller deals to help Milwaukee financially before eventually signing the line on a much larger deal later on. That's just a thought, but truly, it's far too early to be talking about what might happen in free agency next offseason.
For now, Gary Trent Jr. and the Milwaukee Bucks are focused on winning an NBA Championship, and the rest of the questions will be answered at a later date. Yet, at 25, there's no doubt that Trent has a good amount of basketball left in him, and it would be great to see it unfold in Milwaukee.
