Bucks rookie turns heads with high-flying play involving Giannis Antetokounmpo
By Dalton Sell
Although it's not over just yet, Milwaukee Bucks rookie Tyler Smith currently holds the title for most eye-catching play in training camp.
A training camp video released by the team featured a montage of the best plays thus far, and the standout was Tyler Smith leaping up and dunking over Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Tyler Smith's confidence is showing for the Bucks
There are a couple of quick takeaways from this. First, it's great to see that Giannis is still not afraid to jump to contest dunks. He's never been scared of getting dunked on. Sometimes, it works in his favor. Game 4 of the 2021 NBA Finals is an excellent example, and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, he's not giving up any easy dunks at the hoop to anyone, even rookie teammates.
Second, this shows Tyler Smith's confidence. Trying to throw down a dunk through contact against a 7-foot former Defensive Player of the Year is something a lot of 19-year-old players may have shied away from. Not Smith. Not only did he go up for the dunk, but he finished it over Antetokounmpo with the utmost authority.
It must be noted that Giannis Antetokounmpo got Tyler Smith back with a poster dunk of his own that was featured in the same video.
Going against Giannis Antetokounmpo could be great for Tyler Smith's early development. Both are towering big men with freakish athleticism who like to attack the hoop. Learning tips from one of the best in the business could do a lot for a rookie looking to make a name for themselves at this level of play. These scrimmages in training camp are a great start in helping him get his feet wet.
Smith likely won't be in coach Doc Rivers' plans this season, but if he keeps impressing in camp with high-energy plays like this one, he will certainly command more attention. For a team that needed a high dose of athleticism in the frontcourt this offseason, the Milwaukee Bucks undoubtedly picked up an interesting long-term fit in Tyler Smith, who is making a strong first impression with the team.
Between Tyler Smith making plays and Doc Rivers praising Gary Trent Jr. for his effort on defense in the early days of camp, things appear to be going well for the Milwaukee Bucks newcomers thus far. The big test comes Sunday when the Bucks kick off the preseason against the Detroit Pistons.
