From vendor to NBA champion, "Giannis: The Marvelous Journey" captures star's rise

These days, Giannis Antetokounmpo is known as one of the best players to ever grace an NBA court and arguably the greatest Wisconsin athlete to ever lace them up.

However, things were not always like that. Before the shoe deals, endorsements and luxury of life as an NBA player in general, all Antetokounmpo had was his family. Growing up in Greece with immigrant parents and three brothers, things were not easy for the family. They did what they could to put food on the table, which included selling knickknacks, such as sunglasses, on the streets to earn money.

Basketball was never a focus for Antetokounmpo until he discovered that it could be a way for him to provide for his family. From that point on, his tireless work ethic helped Antetokounmpo become the player and man he is today. "Giannis: The Marvelous Journey," a brand new documentary from Amazon Prime Video, perfectly captures every step in Antetokounmpo's triumphant rise.

Clocking in with a runtime just under two hours, the documentary is an emotional roller coaster ride from beginning to end.

At various times, Antetokounmpo's trademark humor shines through, making quips and spreading his contagious laughter. At other points, the vulnerable side of the MVP takes center stage when dealing with personal struggles, such as the death of a close one or inner battles involving a desire to give up playing the game of basketball for good. Through and through, it's remarkable.

Yet, with family being such an important part of Antetokounmpo's entire life, this tale could not be told without their input. Brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex, mother Veronica, and significant other Mariah are all featured heavily throughout as they deliver their meaningful insight into the events unfolding, both tragic and uplifting.

Star-studded names fill the cast all-around, ranging from teammates, coaches and other key figures who have been on this wild ride alongside Antetokounmpo. Bucks and NBA fans in general will see no shortage of familair faces sprinkled throughout the runtime.

There have been plenty of adaptations of Antetokounmpo's journey over the past few years, which is mainly due to it being such an incredible story. It is undeniably one of the best sports stories to ever unfold, and more chapters are being written by the day. This documentary is a tremendous telling of the story that will likely have everyone, not just Bucks fans, glued to their seats throughout.
