AJ Johnson was a surprise selection by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of this year's NBA Draft but has shown some promise so far in preseason.

The Bucks entered the draft with many expecting them to take a wing that would add defensive support or take a center to beef up the frontcourt rotation. They did neither by taking 19-year-old Johnson following his time in Australia, where he didn't touch the floor too much in Illawarra.

To add to that concern, he only weighed 167 pounds, which added further doubt from many with his lack of physical presence being something that the Milwaukee Bucks were hoping to address. Giannis Antetokounmpo backed him on media day and said he can aid the tempo of the bench unit and be a real asset in Milwaukee this season and moving forward in the future, providing optimism.

AJ Johnson's early performance for the Milwaukee Bucks

Against the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson impressed in 22 minutes off the bench. He pushed the tempo and was great on the boards, grabbing four rebounds to go with his 13 points on 41.7 percent shooting and three assists.

That was followed up in the win over the Chicago Bulls, with him notching just six points, three boards and four assists on 13.3 percent shooting, which is, of course, a slight concern, but he never stopped going and was confident in everything he did.

The shooting splits are a slight concern, but everyone knew this was going to be a work in progress, and Johnson has shown he has great potential.

It is likely that AJ Johnson will play very little for the Bucks early on with the addition of Delon Wright to the backcourt and Doc Rivers looking to his veterans as he figures out the rotations. As he grows,
here are three fellow rookies that he will constantly be compared to this season due to where they were all picked in the draft.
