Adam: In spite of his various critics, Randy Wittman has generally been really successful with the work he’s done with the Wizards. Saying that, if this season continues to peter out like it has been for Washington, will it be one bridge too far for him in terms of relationship with fans and ownership?

Ben: Washington’s brass has been very patient, arguably to a fault.

Wittman signed a multi-year contract extension last summer, and for him to lose his job this season, it would probably take a 4 or 5 game first round series loss. With the way Washington has been playing, that might not be too much of a stretch.

While I, like many, have been critical of Wittman, it’s also important to note how much he’s done for Washington over the past several seasons. From the people I’ve spoken to, Wall and the rest of Washington’s roster still respect Wittman and they understand that his system works.

Still, Wittman isn’t a perfect coach. He doesn’t utilize analytics and the offense continues to struggle, despite having players like Wall, Bradley Beal, Pierce, Nene and Marcin Gortat. When you have the fastest player in the league on your team, you probably shouldn’t have a difficult time pushing the ball in transition.

When the team is struggling, the coach will inevitably get blamed. Wittman isn’t perfect, but the roster he’s working with isn’t versatile or deep enough to compete against elite-level competition. For Wittman’s sake, let’s hope the team turns it around soon.
