Minneapolis Lakers: 1958-59

It’s easy to forget now, but the Lakers haven’t always been the behemoth from the City of Angels that we all know and

love

…feel strongly about. Before they moved to Los Angeles, the Lakers belonged to one of the Twin Cities.

The Lakers generally weren’t any less successful in Minneapolis either. The Lakers made the Playoffs in their first nine seasons of existence and it was only by the time that the 1957-58 season rolled around that they found themselves on the outside looking in.

Just like had happened with the Rockets as I mentioned earlier, the Lakers turned the ship around very quickly via the first pick of the following year’s Draft. In the Lakers’ case it was Elgin Baylor who became the savior.

Baylor finished the season as Rookie of the Year as the Lakers got swept by the Celtics in the Finals, but it would be 16 years before the franchise missed the post-season again.
