Greg Monroe – 1.6 steals per game – 29th in the NBA

This is the other place where the Milwaukee Bucks are mis-represented by Carter-Williams missing time–he’s averaging 1.8 steals per game, good enough for a large tie at 18th in the Association. Come back soon, MCW.

Anyway, the fact that Moose is getting enough steals to be second on the team and still qualify for the top 30 thieves in the NBA is pretty impressive. Despite concerns about his defensive ability, he has at least tried hard early–the team defense started out atrocious, but I think joining a completely new system has a learning curve to it.

And while winning possessions for the Bucks through steals and blocks isn’t all that determines good defense, it definitely helps a team in a big way. As long as Moose keeps hustling hard on defense and creating some havoc in the paint, he’ll continue to be a big plus for Milwaukee on both sides of the ball.

I expect Monroe’s defense to get even better as the season goes on and he really starts fitting into Jason Kidd‘s scheme, meaning he could end up getting even more steals per game.
