It was news that felt like it was coming for quite a while, but that didn’t make it any less surprising when Larry Sanders eventually announced he was stepping away from basketball.

Plagued by off the court issues, the man who many Bucks fans viewed as their long term franchise center announced the news in a heartfelt video via The Player’s Tribune. Sanders had had widely publicized issues with marijuana which had seen him banned by the league on multiple occasions, but they were certainly nothing compared to his struggles with anxiety and depression.

Sanders agreed to a buyout with the Bucks that was much less than the full amount remaining on his contract, and by his own admission he had nothing but good to say about the fans. Sanders’ decision marked a new beginning for the Milwaukee Bucks on the court.
