NBA Draft 2016: BTBP Big Board 1.0
By Adam McGee
16. Melo Trimble – Point Guard (Maryland)
Words by Ti Windisch
Trimble’s 2015-16 season: 14.6 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 5.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.2 BPG, 43.5% FG
Melo Trimble is projected to be a mid-first round pick not because of what he’s done, but because of what he’s projected to do. The 21-year-old still needs some polishing, but could very well end up being a good point guard.
He’ll need to be, because standing at just 6’2″ doesn’t leave many positional options. Being a good passer is a necessary skill for any player that short, and fortunately Trimble is fairly gifted in that regard.
Still though, it’s a little disappointing that no one aspect of Trimble’s statistics jumps out of the box score. He’s shooting just 33 percent from three-point range, which is capable but not very impressive. His per game stats are similarly good, but not great.
The tournament will help determine where Trimble ends up being drafted, but unless he can prove himself as a floor general it seems unlikely he’ll move up into the lottery. NBA teams are looking for more than a tiny combo guard with their lottery picks.
