6. Traded Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Walt Wesley to Los Angeles Lakers for Elmore Smith, Brian Winters, David Meyers, Junior Bridgeman, and future considerations

There are a few reasons why the Milwaukee Bucks trading one of the two greatest NBA players of all time isn’t higher on this list. The first is that Kareem wanted out, and keeping an unhappy Kareem did not seem like a good option.

The second is that the return Milwaukee got really isn’t that bad. Three of those four players ended up in my 50 greatest players in Bucks history list, meaning they at least made some great contributions to the Bucks.

But any time a player of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s caliber gets traded, something is wrong. Kareem would go on to win five NBA titles with the Lakers, while the Milwaukee Bucks have yet to make it back to the NBA Finals since he left.

That right there speaks to how this trade worked out for both teams. So it wasn’t the worst because of extenuating circumstances, but trading Kareem really sucked. Everything in Bucks history would be so different if only Milwaukee could’ve made Kareem happy.
