Weaknesses

The first thing I thought when I saw Dorsey play was, how tall is this guy? Can he play point guard in the NBA? What else does he bring to the table?

Tyler Dorsey measured in at 6’4.5″ with shoes and a 6’5.25″ wing span and tied for the sixth shortest wing span from those measured at the NBA combine in Chicago with Luke Kennard. Dorsey’s height and wing span do not bode well as a future shooting guard in the NBA.

Khris Middleton for example measured in with a 6’10.75″ in the 2012 NBA combine and Rashad Vaughn measured in with a 6’7″ wing span in the 2015 NBA combine. Dorsey actually measured in better than expected as past measurements had him closer to 6’3″.

Dorsey weighed in at 182.6 pounds and the sixth lightest from those measured at the NBA combine. As Dorsey drives to the basket, banging against longer, heavier, and more athletic players will present a challenge for the 21-year-old prospect, who’s almost a year older than most college sophomore entries.

Going through Dorsey’s numbers, something that stood out was how he fared in losses at Oregon during this past season. The scoring didn’t change a great deal, as he averaged 13.8 points per game in losses, but the rest of the stat sheet was often empty. A total of four assists, 16 rebounds, and 11 turnovers in six losses suggests that if his shot isn’t falling, he’s not contributing elsewhere on the floor.

As a true scorer when his shot is off, Dorsey at least does a great job getting to the rim and knocking down a Mark Price-like 95.5 percent of his free throws.

Scoring matters, but will Dorsey be able to shoot and score over the longer shooting guards in the NBA? Would Dorsey be able to initiate an offense or did Coach Dana Altman move him off the ball to discourage a shoot first point guard at Oregon? These questions are the reasons it’s unlikely to hear Tyler Dorsey’s name called in the first round, but let’s see what the experts have to say.
