First look at the rookies

Although we got our first look at the team’s rookies during this year’s Summer League, last night provided us our first glimpse of both D.J. Wilson and Sterling Brown in a more real NBA setting.

With both players getting a nod in the starting lineup and finishing the game in a pressure-filled late game situation as well, both rookies got plenty of run and made contrasting impacts when their respective number was called.

For Wilson, the Michigan product put on a sound performance by scoring nine points and hauling in a single rebound during his 23 minutes on the court. He more than held his own on both ends, displaying his smooth shooting stroke and particularly defending well in space when switched on to some of the more craftier ball handlers for the Mavs.

While Wilson enjoyed a solid, if not spectacular night, Brown’s struggles were evident all throughout the game. In a little over 27 minutes of action, Brown failed to hit a single shot as he went 0-9 from the field and 0-4 from deep on the night.

It just wasn’t Brown’s night as he failed to get comfortable on the offensive end and rushed shots from all areas of the floor that led to misses all over the backboard or not at all in some cases. While he showed some flashes on the defensive end, it was definitely a rough outing that Brown is going to have to quickly put behind him.
