Milwaukee Bucks: Ranking the roster’s trade value
14. Matthew Dellavedova
What he provides
Matthew Dellavedova is a solid backup point guard. Defensively, Dellavedova plays hard, works to get over screens, and is an irritant to opposing players. Offensively, he provides decent spacing, with an above-average shot from three and can also provide secondary ball-handling initiating the offense.
Delly’s game also has severe limitations, though. He is not an elite athlete, and while he often provides effort on defense, his foot speed and quickness can become a problem. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, he struggles to attack close-outs and creates offense by himself or in the pick-and-roll.
Contract situation
Like John Henson, it’s not Dellavedova’s play on the basketball court that makes trading him difficult, but instead his contract situation.
Dellavedova’s current salary is approximately $9.6 million per year for the next three years, which is a lot of money for a backup point guard.
Potential Suitors
Dellavedova can still be helpful to a team in the right situation. Teams that are desperate for guard play would perhaps be willing to make a trade for a backup point.
The problem could be finding an appealing deal where salaries also match. With Dellavedova’s inflated contract, teams won’t be queuing up to part with an expiring contract, unless the Bucks attach another useful asset.
