3. Giannis’ dunk of the year candidate

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Giannis Antetokounmpo destroying the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden for the second year running. In this installment, the Greek Freak put his hand up for dunk of the year, in a moment of sheer athleticism which had the whole NBA world talking.

With the Bucks up by 10 with eight minutes remaining in the third period, Khris Middleton intercepted a wayward pass from New York and started streaking up court with only Tim Hardaway Jr. ahead of him. Antetokounmpo was trailing on his right to complete the two against one mismatch for Milwaukee.

Middleton reached the elbow and threw a pin-point alley-oop pass to Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak then proceeded to rise up above a 6’6″€ Hardaway Jr. who stood upright in anticipation, but could do nothing as Antetokounmpo sailed overhead to receive the pass and throw down the earth shattering dunk.

The moment was over in an instant and those in the crowd who blinked (including yours truly), would have missed it entirely. To truly appreciate the level of difficulty on the dunk, look no further than the dunk contest a mere few weeks later.

Eventual winner Donovan Mitchell scored a perfect 50 by jumping over two crouching individuals while receiving an alley-oop pass, before throwing it down. Antetokounmpo, performed the exact same dunk, except it was done in the midst of an NBA game and was performed over an upright, standing, full sized NBA player. Mitchell’s dunk was amazing. Antetokounmpo’s was out of this world.
