Offense

John Henson is by no means an offensive center, but the same goes for Baynes. John Henson hasn’t scored over 10 points per game since his sophomore season, whereas Baynes has never breached more than seven.

For Henson, the most excitement you might get on the offensive end is a lefty hook. He can finish reasonably well inside, hitting 71 percent from within three feet of the basket, where he takes 56 percent of his shots. The rest of his shots will mostly be hooks from a bit further out, and possibly even a mid-ranger, although his percentages disappoint more and more the further out he goes.

Much the same goes for Baynes. At the rim, he finishes rather poorly for a man of his size, only making about 56 percent. He’s more likely to take the ball out further, where he can shoot a tad better than Henson might, but at only about 46 percent on mid-range shots, you can live with the results there.

Their usage rates are both relatively low, at 15 percent for Henson, and 16.8 percent for Baynes. Henson will take about 12.7 shots per 100 possessions, and yield about 16.8 points, and Baynes about 15, getting 16.2. Already we can tell that this matchup is going to be about a lot more than what their counting numbers will show us.

For the Milwaukee Bucks, one of the biggest complaints of the year has been the weakness of the center position. Led by John Henson, the Bucks ended the season 29th in defensive rebounding percentage, only in front of the Orlando Magic. The Boston Celtics aren’t particularly adept at getting offensive rebounds, at 18th in the league, and Baynes is subpar in this category as well.

Rebounding is a team effort, but that largely falls on the shoulders of the team’s center. Fortunately for Henson, the Celtics aren’t a team that’s going to punish him as much as others might on that front.
