Patrick St. Andrews

The youngest of an already young and dynamic coaching staff, 27-year-old Patrick St. Andrews was promoted to the Hawks’ assistant coaching team last September.

St. Andrews had previously worked for the Hawks since 2013. Initially St. Andrews served as a Seasonal Assistant, Basketball Operations, before becoming an assistant video co-ordinator in 2014-15, and eventually rising to the role of video co-ordinator.

St. Andrews’ speedy ascent may in part be attributable to Budenholzer’s own history working his way up from the film room.

Beyond that, his case certainly wasn’t hurt by his role as an assistant to former Hawks assistant and current Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson with the Dominican Republic at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship.

St. Andrews had played collegiately at Penn State Behrend, but just as significant from his time in college was likely the statistical knowledge he built up during his time studying economics. That background led to St. Andrews having something of an analytics focus as he worked on scouting reports and player development with the Hawks.

Speaking of what it’s like to work alongside Budenholzer, St. Andrews seems keenly aware of the advantages that come with that for someone coming to coaching from his background.

"“He was Coach Pop’s video guy in San Antonio and kind of grew up in the video room. He’s been in my shoes. He knows how hard it is at times. He treated me with a lot of respect and gave me a lot of responsibility and opportunity to grow and find my own voice and obviously learn a lot about the game.”"
