NBA Draft 2018 Prospect Watch: De’Anthony Melton
Weaknesses
Without a doubt, the biggest point of concern surrounding Melton is his shooting ability and overall scoring proficiency.
That obviously shows most in the former Trojan’s inconsistency to hit from beyond the arc as he shot 28.4 percent on 2.1 three-point attempts per game during the 2016-17 season. With that said, Melton’s shot looked reasonably better in game action during last week’s NBA Draft Combine as Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated noted in his recap of the event:
"“His jumper has been labeled as a swing skill for his success, but Melton’s shooting form looks fine and leaves room for optimism.”"
Regardless of where he’s progressed in his form to this point, Melton will still have to assure NBA teams that being able to extend out to three-point range effectively will be a featured tool in his arsenal when it’s all said and done.
Along with that, Melton has a ways to go as far as his ball-handling is concerned, which certainly determines whether he’ll be tasked as a primary playmaker or more frequently as a secondary one.
And lastly, Melton isn’t overly athletic, whether that’s in terms of exploding to the rim off of one or two-footed dunks or in his end to end speed.
