NBA Free Agency: Could the Bucks be a landing spot for sharpshooter Doug McDermott?
Weaknesses
For as skilled of a shooter he is as well as the weapon he poses to be offensively, significant questions linger across all areas of McDermott’s game.
The bulk of them lie on the defensive end where McDermott’s reputation as a defender is far from glamorous by any means, despite having at best, average physical tools (6’7″ with a 6’9″ wingspan).
The biggest reason for that is due to McDermott not having the foot speed and overall athleticism to cover more athletic wings or forwards, leading him to have to be creatively deployed by coaching staffs to limit how much he’ll be exploited on that side of the floor.
While the concerns around his defensive abilities are paramount, McDermott struggles to make a reliable impact when cleaning up the glass on both ends as well, seeing that he’s tallied a 6.1 total rebounding percentage throughout his career.
Lastly, although he’s incrementally improved on his assist totals year over year, McDermott has shown little influence on making plays with the ball in his hands on a regular basis.
