Having wrapped up his rookie contract following the end of the season, McDermott was initially heading toward restricted free agency with the Mavericks.

In fact, the Mavericks reportedly extended McDermott’s qualifying offer to him earlier this week, as they did with Yogi Farrell and Salah Mejri, in advance of the free agency period opening up.

However, as ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported Wednesday afternoon, the Mavericks did an about face and rescinded their qualifying offer to McDermott, which has now made the 26-year-old an unrestricted free agent.

Coming off the heels of their headlining draft night, the Mavericks have been determined to put their rebuild into overdrive by adding a high profile center.

They’ve most notably been linked to current Los Angeles Clippers big man DeAndre Jordan for a possible trade, but Marc Stein of the New York Times has relayed that other potential frontcourt targets could be DeMarcus Cousins of the New Orleans Pelicans as well as Clint Capela of the Houston Rockets.

In order to catch the big fish they desire, McDermott has become a cap casualty as the Mavericks have opened up as much space as they can to make the big addition they’re looking to make this summer (of note, Mejri met the same fate as McDermott Thursday afternoon).

As Lowe noted, the Mavericks have an interest in bringing back McDermott, but without the RFA status hanging over him, he’s certainly able to find the best situation and deal for him at this stage, whether that’s in Dallas or elsewhere.
