Fit with Bucks

With his newly changed free agent status, the likelihood that McDermott adds another stop to his increasingly nomadic career has certainly increased heading into this year’s free agency.

Whether that could or will be in Milwaukee remains to be seen, but the Bucks do stand as an interesting fit for the four-year pro on paper.

As we’ve talked about with similar sharpshooting free agents, the idea of adding a three-point marksman such as McDermott would greatly boost a Bucks offense that will certainly have a more modern look to it under new head coach Mike Budenholzer.

Adding a complementary piece like McDermott would give the Bucks a different dimension based on how much he excels from filling it up by moving off the ball.

And it shouldn’t be dismissed that Budenholzer has a history of weaponizing deadeye shooters as he did with fellow Creighton alum Kyle Korver during his time with the Atlanta Hawks.

But McDermott’s weaknesses and lack of a well rounded game are not to be ignored either and certainly run counter to the defensive potential Coach Bud has been piping up since landing in Milwaukee nearly a month-and-a-half ago.

Of course, any exploration of adding a free agent this summer hinges on what the team decides to do with impending restricted free agent Jabari Parker. Should the Bucks ultimately decide on moving on from the Duke product, they’ll undoubtedly be looking to find an optimal reserve forward that could spend time on the floor alongside their cornerstone players.

If the Bucks are open to a more specialist-type player, McDermott is now slotted up there in terms of players to consider with the limited resources they have available. However, if they’re unable to look past his deficiencies, it’s hard seeing the idea of McDermott coming to Milwaukee getting off the ground floor.
