Brown and Wilson continue to learn
The prospect of Summer League is often associated with the potential for young NBA players to star and excel, but just as significant is the opportunity it gives those players to play freely, fail and learn.
That was certainly on display on Sunday evening, as following an excellent first three quarters of action, Sterling Brown went ice cold from the field to close the game with the Mavericks and made a couple of costly mistakes which ultimately cost his team the game.
Across the course of the game, Brown was tasked with being much more assertive and creating his own offense, something which he’d never have the opportunity to do throughout the course of the NBA season.
Although that coincided with five turnovers and inconsistent shooting, the value of that experience shouldn’t be underestimated.
Speaking to Matt Velazquez of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Brown displayed his own understanding of what those kind of moments could mean for him longer-term.
"“It’s just going to take me to the next level and going to help me improve my game and show the coaches and front office I’m able to do it. Just got to clean it up a little bit, make some better decisions, make some better reads. It’s a learning experience. It’s good for me.”"
Brown’s struggles late against the Mavericks shouldn’t, and likely won’t, do anything to dissuade the Bucks from continuing to trust in him and D.J. Wilson to step out of their comfort zone over the remainder of the team’s Summer League run. When the regular season comes around, those lessons may prove invaluable in making both of the 2017 picks much more productive too.
