How Duval fits the Bucks

First and foremost, Duval’s fit on the court will be more seen through the Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, next year and likely throughout the life span of his two-way contract (which Adam Zagoria of Zags Blog relays is for one year).

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean Duval won’t see time up with the Bucks, given the nature of how two-way contracts work. But barring injuries coming to pass (knock on wood), the bulk of Duval’s reps with the parent club will come during practice sessions under the guidance of new head coach Mike Budenholzer and his staff.

At this point, what’s interesting is the basis behind the move on the Bucks’ part. Seeing that we’ll be entering the second season with two-way contracts being available to teams, the league is still coming to terms with how to best utilize players to their benefit on both the NBA level and the G League level, including the Bucks.

So while the preference will be targeting proven players that have been knocking on the NBA’s door and may be coveted overseas with two-way contracts, we’ve yet to see teams really commit to players that may stand as long-term projects as it relates to their NBA prospects.

Could the Bucks be ahead of their curve by essentially bringing in a player that’s clearly talented, physically and athletically gifted, but leans on the rawer side with notable deficiencies? That very well may be the case.

With that said, it’s important to note that it’s a swing that may not ultimately work out in the way the Bucks envision it to at this stage and Duval could be yet another player that could come and go by way of the two-way deal in a year’s time.

At the very least, there’s a level of ambition behind the addition of Duval and the opportunity would not have been presented to the Bucks had things shook out differently for Duval over the last year and change.

With the help of Coach Bud’s staff as well as Herd head coach Jordan Brady and his coaching staff, Duval may turn his setback of going undrafted into a mere footnote in the long run of his career if everything breaks his way.
