Christian Wood
Prediction: Will earn a roster spot (and have at least one poster dunk)
Why it will happen: Wood has been one of the best stories of the offseason for the Bucks. The 6’11” big man from UNLV spent his first two seasons in the NBA at the back of the rotation with the 76ers and Hornets
But, when he showed up on the Bucks Summer League roster, he CAME TO PLAY. Wood came out of nowhere to dominate down low for the Bucks and dunk on everyone. Look at these highlights.
One thing to watch for in his Summer League play is his second-jump. His ability to get off the ground after his initial jump, whether it’s for a shot, rebound or block, is impressive. That’s the kind of athleticism that makes great centers in the NBA.
Now, I know Summer League isn’t exactly a world-class competition, but Wood played like a player the Bucks would love to have on the team. He’s tall, lanky, can protect the rim, clean up the glass and punish opponents down low. He’s also still very young, having just turned 23.
The Bucks were horrendous when it came to rebounding last season, and if Wood can help in even the slightest regard for that category, he’s worth a roster spot. Also, at some point during the season he’s going to get an offensive rebound and slam it down someone’s throat.
I’m all in on the Christian Wood train.
(Bonus prediction: By the laws of roster size, this prediction also means Tyler Zeller is not making the team.)
Why it won’t happen: Scouting a player based on his Summer League performance is like scouting a quarterback based on his ability to throw in shorts. You end up drafting Josh Allen and no one’s happy.
