We talked about one reunion for Budenholzer from his Atlanta days, why not another?
Korver now resides in Cleveland, where the Cavaliers are in a weird mode of trying to rebuild following LeBron James‘ departure, while trying to remain competitive at the same time.
Most of the team is left over from the four-straight NBA Finals appearances but without LeBron no one expects them to make another playoff run. If things start out poorly and quickly get worse in Cleveland, expect the Cavs to start unloading some of their veteran players for future assets.
If the Bucks are smart, they’ll be there to scoop up a player like Korver. Since he came into the league in 2003, Korver has been known as an elite knock-down three-point shooter, but it’s hard to argue against his best years being the four he spent in Atlanta while under Budenholzer.
In Atlanta, Korver never shot lower than 39 percent from beyond the arc in a season, eclipsing 47 percent over a season twice. Together, Korver and Budenholzer rose to new heights, winning 60 games in the 2015 season and reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.
Of course, Korver is a couple of years older than he was in Atlanta, but he still shot 43 percent from three last season and seems not to be slowing down anytime soon. NBA teams can never have enough shooting, and with Budenholzer’s new three-point heavy offense, a dead-eye sniper like Korver could do wonders.
Playing with LeBron in Cleveland, Korver got plenty of open looks as defenses got sucked into LeBron’s gravity, and there’s no reason to believe the same wouldn’t happen with Korver playing alongside Giannis.
The Cavs need to move on from the LeBron era, including some of the players leftover, like Korver. Plus, the Bucks can give them back their folk hero, Matthew Dellavedova, to give the fans something to cheer about!
A deal between the two parties could bring about the return of a conquering Aussie hero, and some draft capital, for the Cavs, while the Bucks would get a shooter they can easily plug into their offense off the bench. Everyone wins.
