Anthony Davis

The Lakers are going to be one of the NBA’s very biggest stories this year, and for the first time in a long time, they’ll be deserving of that kind of status.

Central to the purple and gold story in 2019-20 will be how the dynamic between Anthony Davis and LeBron James shakes out. Both could be MVP contenders this year, but the rumblings coming out of the Lakers indicate that James is willing to cede some power to allow Davis to be the team’s primary option this year.

That puts Davis in the lead for this honor in the context of his own team, and places significant pressure on his shoulders. If Davis can finally realize his potential in having it translate to team success, restoring the Lakers to a spot at the head of the NBA’s top table, he’ll have a compelling case.

Davis has been touted as a future MVP winner since before he was drafted, yet his time in New Orleans has to be looked back on as a major failure on his part as much as the organization’s.

Based on his track record, there’s little reason to believe that Davis could sufficiently buoy the Lakers if James misses any time, but if James truly embraces a sidekick role, then the Lakers’ new No. 3 could well be propelled to the forefront of the NBA mix.
