The Milwaukee Bucks overcame a feisty effort from the Minnesota Timberwolves Wednesday night to survive and secure their first win of the new year.

It wasn’t a pretty effort to ring in the new year, but the Milwaukee Bucks survived a grimy affair Wednesday night as they outlasted the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 106-104 victory at Fiserv Forum.

The Wolves quickly set the tone for the night as they got off a strong start as the Bucks took just over three and a half minutes to get their first bucket to go down. Minnesota’s hot start naturally cooled off and their work defensively was key to holding a 23-19 edge at the end of one.

Slowly and surely, the Bucks’ offense started to come to life over the course of the second quarter where they held their first lead of the night at the 8:47 mark in the period.

The Bucks continued to fend off the Wolves as the quarter wore on and they entered halftime with a 52-51 lead.

It looked as if the Bucks were ready to separate themselves from the Wolves as they held their biggest lead (10) just under seven minutes into the third quarter.

But as they had done all throughout the night, the Wolves kept within striking distance of the Bucks and trailed by 77-71 through three.

That carried over into the fourth quarter as things got both testy and choppy between the two squads with the Bucks clinging to a brief edge. And while it was far from convincing, the Bucks got the better of the shorthanded Wolves by shutting down their last-ditch comeback attempt to the final buzzer.

So without further ado, let’s break down what stood out in the Bucks’ win over the Minnesota Timberwolves from Wednesday night, starting with the performance of reigning MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo.
