Sweet home, San Antonio

As they continue to try and break through in the playoff picture where they currently rank as the ninth seed and trail the Portland Trail Blazers, the Spurs have the unenviable task of taking on the league’s best in the Bucks for the second straight game.

It’s worth mentioning that the Spurs have been far more successful on their own floor where they currently post a 10-9 record heading into Monday night’s tilt. With that said, it will only be a brief respite as they have to return to the road for a four-game trip out East following Monday night.

But first things first, the Bucks stand in the way of the Spurs breaking up their current two-game losing skid as they have fallen to the Bucks and the Oklahoma City Thunder to open up the new year.

As we saw Saturday night, the Spurs’ strategy of trying to match the Bucks’ offensive firepower failed them as the night progressively went along, as they finished with a 46.8 effective field goal percentage, the seventh-worst mark the Spurs have posted in a single game. If not for their ability to get to the free throw line where they connected on 31 of their 34 attempts and the Bucks playing out of character with their inability to defend without fouling, the Spurs made it a closer game than it appeared to have been.

We’ll just have to see whether legendary head coach Gregg Popovich will turn to a different tactic to slow down the Bucks and whether the Spurs can put in a better performance on their home floor.
