What the experts say

ESPN [$] (Jonathan Givony): 30th

The Athletic [$] (Sam Vecenie): 24th

Sports Illustrated (Jeremy Woo): 44th

Sporting News (Chris Stone): 27th

Bleacher Report (Jonathan Wassermann): 29th

Quotes:

Placing him 44th on his most recent Big Board, Woo detailed the skepticism he has in Smith, despite the many strides he made over the course of his sophomore season at Maryland:

"“Smith is naturally more of a pick and pop guy who protects the rim than a low-post banger, anyway. He’s had a strong year overall, and has played his way into the late first/early second round picture, with the floor-spacing potential and improved all-around play helping his case. But you do worry a bit about translation, and how he holds up defensively in terms of mobility and physicality.”"

On the other hand, Wassermann pointed to the rare marks that Smith accomplished as a sophomore as reasons why he’ll likely garner looks throughout the first round of the draft:

"“On pace to finish as one of six players since 1992 to average at least 10 rebounds, two blocks and a three-pointer, Smith checks boxes that NBA teams pay for, even if he doesn’t offer a great deal of scoring or passing potential. His three-and-D and energy should earn him first-round looks, particularly if he shoots well during workouts.”"
