Milwaukee Bucks NBA Draft Prospect Watch – Leandro Bolmaro: Fit with the Bucks

The second of the international prospects we’ve covered so far in the lead up to the eventually postponed draft, there’s a whole different set of circumstances that the Bucks have to weigh in being able to add Bolmaro into the fold such as negotiating his NBA buyout.

Matt Babcock of Babcock Hoops reported in late February that Bolmaro’s buyout comes in at $900,000 and there’s always the possibility that Bolmaro could be a draft-and-stash candidate.

Of course, that latter point doesn’t help the Bucks win now as they’ll look to maintain the longevity of this current title-contending window and general manager Jon Horst has valued players who can theoretically contribute immediately under his tenure.

With that said, there’s plenty of overlap with the kind of characteristics and qualities that Horst has historically identified from draft prospects like the ‘pass, dribble, shoot’ moniker he came up with a couple of drafts ago and Bolmaro’s positional size and versatility.

Obviously the state of Bolmaro’s shooting ability is the biggest point of debate as it relates to hitting all three of those skills that will make him a snug fit within the Bucks’ system and foundation as it’s currently constructed. However, Bolmaro’s toughness and defensive aptitude really does line up with how the Bucks’ perimeter defenders operate schematically under head coach Mike Budenholzer.

Yet the biggest question that hangs over evaluating Bolmaro’s potential fit with the Bucks is the fact that Bolmaro has bounced around in Barcelona’s system and played in different divisions as a result. Taking into account the context of Bolmaro’s performances is almost as important as his individual play itself.

There is plenty of risk involved in selecting Bolmaro as much as the upside that hangs over his skills and development is alluring. A team like the Bucks that may end up weighing whether to select the teenager will have to determine if the reward outweighs the risk.
