Milwaukee Bucks NBA Draft Prospect Watch: Robert Woodard II – Fit with the Bucks

Under Bucks general manager Jon Horst, the Bucks have certainly valued positional size, athleticism and versatility to fill out their roster and foundation around their core stars.

That’s obviously a good jumping off point with whichever direction the Bucks go with their first round pick acquired from the Indiana Pacers last offseason and Woodard is expected to be available by that time.

Certainly, Woodard’s palpable energy and explosiveness is captivating at a visceral level and the same goes for his defensive effort, versatility, and overall intangibles. And while he is only scratching the surface in being able to fill out his game on the skills side, the projection is there that Woodard fits the billing of a quality 3-and-D forward.

With that said, the incomplete résumé as it relates to Woodard’s perimeter shooting is a big concern and the same goes for his efficiency from the free throw line. Add in the fact that Woodard won’t be asked to take on some semblance of ball handling abilities and it’s plain to see that Woodard won’t veer much outside of that 3-and-D box.

That puts an extra emphasis on the 20-year-old being able to space the floor and hit threes at a high volume, taking advantage of lapses made by opposing defenses, and continue building up a slashing game to attack closeouts.

The Bucks will always be in the market to add complementary pieces and there is a lot to like about how Woodard affects games in his way. But still, Woodard is very much a development project at this point and spot minutes and some number of G League assignments look to be in his future.

For a team that has built their foundation and put all of the chips to the middle of the table at this moment, the prospect of selecting a player that may be better suited to instantly contribute may be worth exploring more. Whether Woodard can do that or even be a dynamic option is a big question that we won’t have the answer to for quite some time.
