Milwaukee Bucks: In search of the best Bucks player nicknames – Paul Mokeski

Paul Mokeski experienced a well-traveled 11-year NBA career, but it was with the Milwaukee Bucks where the seven-footer had a home for six of those seasons.

That coincided with the Bucks reaching the heights of their strong run throughout the 1980s, all of which Mokeski played a largely reserve role to give the Bucks size on the interior when going up against the well-regarded big men of that time.

While Mokeksi wasn’t particularly skilled and filled in the gaps around the Bucks’ strong perimeter players, he made up with his work ethic, know-how and heft to maintain a role within the team’s rotation under then-Bucks head coach Don Nelson.

That ultimately led to Mokeski getting the Doucette treatment and earning the nickname ‘Speed Bump,’ which the announcer explained his reasoning for after his time calling games for the Bucks:

"“My nickname for Paul Mokeski, which his wife hated me for. He wasn’t the most handsome guy, but I wasn’t talking about the way he looked, but the way he played. I called him “Speedbump” because he wouldn’t stop you, but he’d slow you down.”"

Despite the ire that Doucette may have gotten from Mokeski’s immediate family, ‘Speed Bump’ will forever be remembered.
