Milwaukee Bucks: Revisiting Wesley Matthews 2019-20 season so far – One big question moving forward
While Matthews’ has been the Bucks’ Iron Man in the starting lineup after having started in all 62 of his appearances, with three absences littered between, his role moving forward going into and throughout the Bucks’ playoff run may be fascinating to watch.
Clearly, Matthews carves out a necessary role that opens up the floor offensively for the Bucks’ cornerstones while he happily takes on some of the toughest defensive assignments you can have. Replacing that isn’t easy by any means and limiting Matthews’ role could have a knock-on effect in how a five-man unit can operate on the floor.
But with speculation rising over what a Bucks closing lineup may look like when they resume their bid to win an NBA title, the question of whether the Madison native would be a part of such a unit is pretty significant one.
Of the many wings the Bucks have on their roster and within the rotation, it’s Matthews and Kyle Korver who stands as the team’s trusty options for Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer. However, someone like Donte DiVincenzo, who’s proven so far that no moment or situation is too big for him, has equally gained Bud’s trust throughout DiVincenzo’s growing stay in Milwaukee.
The Bucks and Budenholzer’ trust in the depth the Bucks have collected over the last two years especially has formed this kind of first world problem that the contending Bucks may have on their hands. That doesn’t make a decision in this regard all that easier, though.
Matthews could easily solve this potential question if he supplies the same perimeter shooting and defensive toughness that he has largely given the Bucks all season. Anything short of that, though, and that’s where things might get interesting in terms of how Matthews’ role may look when everything is on the line.
