Milwaukee Bucks: 3 biggest needs to address this offseason
3 biggest needs the Milwaukee Bucks need to address this offseason – Replenishing their wings
The Bucks made the calculated decision to move on from Malcolm Brogdon last offseason and in his stead, they took on a committee approach to fill around their foundation of Antetokounmpo, Middleton, Bledsoe and Brook Lopez.
Now, more than a year later, that committee may break off and leave the Bucks with plenty of roster spots to fill.
After hitting rock bottom on the court, Sterling Brown will be hitting restricted free agency. Pat Connaughton will also hit the open market, though as an unrestricted free agent (the Bucks do hold his bird rights). Kyle Korver is contemplating retirement after falling short of winning an NBA championship and Wesley Matthews holds a $2.6 player option for next season.
All that leaves is Donte DiVincenzo capable of playing at the 2 as an off-ball guard, whether off the bench or in the starting unit, of the Bucks players that are under contract/control for next season.
With very few avenues to restock their wing rotation with viable options in free agency, a lot is hinging on Matthews picking up his option for next season. The question in that regard is whether Matthews has improved his value around the league and on the market, whether that was seen in his ability to slow down Miami Heat All-Star wing Jimmy Butler during the Conference Semifinals.
Even as his 3-point shooting was streaky throughout the season and the playoff run, Matthews’ steely defensive presence made life a lot easier for the Bucks’ perimeter players and the team’s defense in general as they went to form the best defensive unit for the second straight season.
If Matthews decides to make his Milwaukee homecoming a one-year stint this offseason, it puts even more pressure on the Bucks to find someone to shore up their backcourt situation.
