Milwaukee Bucks: 3 reasons for pursuing Robert Covington trade – Shooting

The Bucks are in the market for playmaking and shooting this offseason, and Covington helps with the latter. Recently just finishing his seventh NBA season, Covington is a 35.6 percent career shooter from behind the arc and has heaved 6.6 attempts per game while in the NBA.

In addition to his fit in the frontcourt, Covington’s 3-point shooting is a point of interest to a team that lets it fly like the Bucks.

Between his time in Minnesota and Houston, Covington recorded a 3-point attempt rate of 66.4 percent, which ranks slightly higher than his 63 3-point attempt rate for his NBA career. While he just shot 33.5 percent from three on the year, that downturn could be explained by the fact that Covington hit 33 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes last season, per NBA.com/stats.

With that said, Covington flipped the switch in the playoffs as he connected on 13 of his 27 threes during the postseason last year. While the 12 games that Covington’s hot streak came in are clearly a small sample size, the Bucks could have undoubtedly used some floor spacing in their postseason run, to say the least.

Bringing in a high-volume shooter from distance like Covington would make him a snug fit in this offense. As the Bucks find themselves scouring the market for capable 3-point shooters to space out the offense, the interest in Covington is surely justifiable.
