Milwaukee Bucks: 3 reasons for pursuing Robert Covington trade – Defense

Without question, Covington has steadily been one of the most recognizable 3-and-D players in the league over the years. While his aforementioned 3-point shooting is useful to maximizing his potential fit for the Bucks, the same goes for his hard-nosed defensive presence.

At 6’7″, Covington can defend multiple positions across the board effectively and disrupts opposing offenses with his ability to defend off the ball. Former Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni detailed Covington’s versatile defensive presence to Houston Chronicle’s Johnathan Feigen ($$):

"“He’s just one of the five guys on the floor that has a particular skill set,” D’Antoni said. “It’s up to Robert. Robert does a good job with our switching technique, or when to switch, when to double. When you have certain skills, certain people are going to jump out and do what they do. He’s got a unique ability to block shots and steal the ball and we take advantage of it.”"

That defensive prowess was prevalent throughout the season, as he averaged 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocks across 70 games this season. Covington did that while playing as a small ball center for many minutes upon landing with the Rockets midway through the season.

The Bucks’ identity under head coach Mike Budenholzer has come on the defensive side of the ball and adding a player of Covington’s elite defensive capabilities would be a welcomed addition.
