Milwaukee Bucks: 3 reasons for pursuing P.J. Tucker through trade – Tucker’s defensive versatility

Even at 35 years old, Tucker is one of the most hard-nosed defensive forwards in the league. When the team fully adapted micro-ball midseason by trading away their starting center in Clint Capela, it was Tucker who took over the starting center duties, despite standing at just 6’5″ himself.

Tucker’s new role saw him match up against some of the game’s best big men. Despite being put at a significant disadvantage due to his height, Tucker fully embraced the challenge. His gritty defensive presence and lower body strength saw him glued to opponents, making it a rough night for opposing bigs.

In fact, after having served as the glue guy for Houston’s defense this season, many believed Tucker was deserving of an All-Defensive selection. However, the nine-year NBA veteran finished fifth among forwards in the voting, making him a snub amid stiff competition.

One of those players that finished ahead of him was Giannis Antetokounmpo, who took home this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award. If the Bucks could add another robust defender alongside the reigning DPOY in the lineup, it would take their already league-best defense up a notch without question.

Tucker’s versatility on that end of the court would be a substantial boost for Bucks, bringing in another seasoned defender with an unmatched sense of toughness.
