Giannis Antetokounmpo wins his second consecutive MVP award

It may not have come under the circumstances he had hoped for, but Giannis Antetokounmpo made history once again by being named the 2019-20 NBA Most Valuable Player not long after the end of the Bucks’ run last season.

Off the heels of an historic regular season campaign, Antetokounmpo managed to top himself after his first MVP-winning season. The Greek Freak averaged 29.5 points on a .553/.304/.633 slash line, 13.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, a steal and a block each over his 30.4 minutes per game.

With the Bucks having been on a historic winning pace before the season shutdown, Antetokounmpo and his team’s dominance was a defining story in the NBA for much of the year. That was certainly reflected in the final vote tallies where Antetokounmpo won 85 first-place votes, vastly outpacing LeBron James’ 16 first-place votes.

By winning his second straight MVP, Antetokounmpo joined an exclusive list of back-to-back MVP winners and further entrenched himself in the pantheon of Bucks greats by ranking alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. While he is still writing his story, Antetokounmpo’s basketball legacy is also quickly coming together as well.

As Antetokounmpo’s MVP victory was seen as all but an inevitability, the question, especially in light of the Bucks’ playoff collapse, was whether his time in Milwaukee would be seen the same way. As he pondered what to do with his supermax extension offer, the Bucks felt the pressure to entice the MVP to stay in Milwaukee long-term.
