Third key – The Milwaukee Bucks keep capitalizing on second chances

While not a primary focus of their offense for obvious reasons, the Bucks’ ability to extend offensive possessions through crashing the glass has put a different spin on their system under Budenholzer.

By posting a 29.2 offensive rebounding percentage through their first 11 games, the Bucks’ energy and tenacity on the glass has done wonders for their offense as they continue to do well on their extended possessions. That can be seen in the fact that they’re averaging 14.2 second chance points per game, the sixth-highest mark in the league.

Some of this may be attributed to the new spacing that Budenholzer has instituted that The Athletic’s Eric Nehm ($$) brilliantly covered recently.

By changing the general shape from how the Bucks’ offense has operated over the last two seasons, there is at least one dedicated player that gives the Bucks a chance to clean up their own misses on that side of the ball. Of course, it helps when someone with size like Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez or Bobby Portis is positioned well enough to tap back the ball to one of their teammates, but the Bucks’ relentless nose for the ball on the offensive boards has been a backbreaker for the opposition.

Although it’s played a small fraction into their overall offensive production, the Bucks’ offense has certainly benefited from their newfound presence on the glass and it’s added up to the offensive powerhouse we’re seeing thus far into the 2020-21 season.
