The cons of the Milwaukee Bucks signing Joe Johnson

The biggest question surrounding Johnson remains how much he has left in the tank. Johnson’s last appearance in the NBA came during the 2017-18 season, and even then it was clear that his game was slowing down.

Three years later, it remains unknown just how much Johnson has left to provide. While his upcoming workout with the Bucks could help clear the fog to an extent, it won’t be known for certain until he actually hits the hardwood in a real game.

If the Bucks are looking for a player that can come in and make an immediate difference, it is justifiable to question whether Johnson can be that piece. That concern is only heightened when it comes to the potential financial implications that come with adding that 15th man to Milwaukee’s roster.

As recently detailed by my colleague and fellow site co-expert Jordan Treske, the Bucks are currently just $737,439 under the tax line. With the bonuses in Jrue Holiday’s new contract extension likely to be achieved, the team is on a tight rope when it comes to going into the luxury tax. Would a player like Johnson be enough to make the difference for them to pay that? It is certainly arguable.

There could be others players out there that they could be more willing to push their chips to the center of the table for.
