Should the Milwaukee Bucks sign Joe Johnson?

Milwaukee’s interest in Joe Johnson dates back to last season, where they were reportedly eyeing him after he earned the BIG3 2019 MVP. Johnson ultimately signed a deal with the Detroit Pistons, but it was a short-lived return to the NBA as he was soon waived before the season started.

Seeing that interest pique from the Bucks yet again is not surprising as they look to put the finishing touch on their roster this time around. Johnson could hypothetically spark some offense into the second unit and bring some nice veteran experience. Furthermore, he has some familiarity with a pair of Bucks in Brook Lopez and Jeff Teague, whom he split time with over the years in stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks.

Signing Johnson could be feasible, but unless he puts on an absolute master class during his workout with the Bucks, this is a move they should pass off.

The seven-time All-Star had a fantastic career, but at 39 years old, his best days are undoubtedly behind him. Could he still potentially be a nice piece off the bench? Possibly, but being out of the league for the past three years certainly stacks the odds against him.

Ownership seems willing to go into the tax for the right piece, but it is feasible to question whether Johnson would be enough to tip the needle. The Bucks are dangerously close to crossing the luxury tax this season for the first time since 2003 following Holiday’s extension, and they might be content sticking with the pieces they have now.

Only time will tell, but Johnson’s upcoming workout will answer the many questions surrounding this situation. If he looks ready to contribute back in an NBA environment, the Bucks could offer him that final roster spot, even if his best days are in the rearview.
